My guest houses selection in Shibuya

In this article, I  show you two share houses of very good invoices.They are both in the Shibuya ward. These guest houses are located in the neighbourhoods of Harajuku and Sasazuka. In any case, these accommodations are only a few minutes away from the famous Shibuya station.

Oakhouse Sasazuka

Prices: Single rooms from 75,000 yen per month
Nearest train station: Sasazuka (6 minutes walk)


In Oakhouse Sasazuka you will be close to the districts of Shibuya, Shinjuku and Shimokitazawa. The share house is located in the convenient residential area of Sasazuka. It is a quiet place in the heart of Tokyo.

Please note that this residence is one of the oldest guest house of Oakhouse company. The building is old, but the rooms are really spacious for a share house located in the most popular district of Tokyo. Moreover, the decoration is typically Japanese.


Oakhouse Harajuku Flat

Price: Compartments from 45,000 yen per month. Shared rooms starting at 62,000 yen per month.
Nearest train station: Harajuku (15 minutes walk)


Oakhouse Harajuku Flat is located in the center of the Harajuku district. At this price, I think you can not find a better location in Tokyo. Harajuku is the favourite area of Tokyo fashionistas and designers with these many concept stores.

People who wish to reside in the Oakhouse Harajuku Flat will only have to accept to live in very small spaces. The compartments are small spaces where the ceiling height is really low. That’s simple, it is often impossible to stand in this type of room.

Shared rooms can accommodate two residents. Unfortunately, it is very rare that the two places are set fre at the same time. As a result, it is almost impossible for you to stay with someone you already know. Obviously, these types of housing will not suit everyone.

Shibuya is one of the most popular districts of Tokyo in regard to housing. Its central location in Tokyo as well as the frenetic animation of some of its neighborhoods are for many. These include:

  • The area around Shibuya Station, which attracts young Japanese who want to party.
  • Harajuku, Mecca of the kawaii trends close to Yoyogi Park and the Meiji-Jingu Shrine.
  • Daikanyama, a bohemian neighborhood but rather expensive.
  • Ebisu, another trendy and wealthy district of Tokyo.

Find a room in Shibuya

With so much diversity and entertainment nearby, Shibuya’s residences, share houses and guest houses are among the most popular in Tokyo. In addition, there are very few new share houses that open in this part of the city, so it is quite difficult to find vacant rooms.

It is quite rare that a freshly landed foreigner in Japan finds a room in a share house of Shibuya. This exists, but these foreigners often fall into fake bargains by moving into poor housing. But we’ll talk about this in the next section of this article.

Most of the time, you will have to wait until a resident leaves a share house to be able to book a room. In Shibuya, guest house rooms are rarely vacant for more than a week. You will therefore have to be patient and check regularly the availability of the rooms in the residences that interest you, in order to be able to hope to find the room of your dreams.

The quality of guest houses in Shibuya

Be careful, however, because your “dream room” can easily turn out to be a nightmare. You suspect that if very few new residences open their doors in Shibuya, most of the share houses are rather old. As the turnover of residents is somewhat higher than in other parts of Tokyo, residences tend to deteriorate fairly quickly.

Many newly arrived expatriates in Japan see their dreams dissipate when they discover that their well-situated room is in an outdated conditions. Often, it is worth taking a look at the districts on the outskirts of Shibuya, such as Setagaya or Meguro. They have fewer unpleasant surprises and are still well located, if you study or work in West Tokyo.

If you absolutely want to live in Shibuya, you do not have to worry if you follow the recommendations I gave you at the beginning of this article. I guarantee that all the share houses mentioned above are clean and well maintained. The companies that run them are really serious. So you can go headlong if you can afford to live in this part of Tokyo.

The prices of share houses in Shibuya

This shortage in the guest houses has the consequence of raising the prices of the rooms. You will not find the most affordable accommodation in Tokyo in Shibuya. I would even advise you to be wary if you come across a really attractive offer close to the popular districts of Harajuku, Daikanyama or Ebisu.

The serious companies offer rooms in share house at around 60,000 yen a month. This figure is an average that includes both single rooms and dormitory beds. Private rooms are mostly around 80,000 yen, while the rent for sleeping in a dormitory is around 45,000 yen.

I’m not kidding. Be wary if you find rents much lower than these prices.
